zuma rock and the life cyle of koro people of zuba
For For historians and practicing researchers, many times it becomes difficult to pass
new knowledge to the coming generation. The historical books on traditions,
cultures and heritages of particular tribes and people are non-existence, human
history and artifacts are fast dying with the memories and tacit knowledge of
the individuals, who are either dead or eroded by religious affiliation. The book titled: "
ZUMA ROCK AND THE LIFE CYCLE OF KORO PEOPLE OF ZUBA " written by Jibrin
Mamman of Tungan Maje - Zuba, Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja is not only an inspiration for the new generation to know of
their history, traditions and cultures but in fact their heritage and artifacts
that is embedded in the prominent Zuma Rock, which at a point in time played a
prominent role in the life cycle of the Koro people of Zuba and their
environment. It was regarded as the pride of the Koro people as proclaimed by
their fore fathers.
The
book, which is written in twelve chapters started with chapter one on: the
exodus of the Koro people from the Kororofa empire; chapter two, the worshiping
of Zuma Rock by the Koro people; chapter three, the origin of the name “Zuma
Rock”; chapter four, Zuba and Zuma rock; chapter five, Zuba and Abuja (Suleja);
chapter six, Koro communities around Zuma rock; chapter seven, Zuma rock and
the Koro people; chapter eight, the Koro Nulu; chapter nine, Federal Capital
Territory and Zuma Rock; chapter ten, Zuma Rock traditions and Agora of Zuba
leadership; chapter eleven, wonders and beliefs known of Zuma Rock and ended up
with the Koro masquerades as chapter twelve.
This
book will not only bring the past to the present but a total reincarnation of
the Koro people traditions and cultures that the Koro people will live to
cherish, admire and remember. I therefore call and recommend this book to not
only the Koro people with particular reference to the Zuba people but to all
researchers, historians, the Koro people of other parts of the world to read
and make this book handy and a reference point for other generations yet
unborn. It is an interesting, historical and a memorable document that is full
of facts passed from tacit knowledge of the past generations to the
present.
I
wish you all, happy reading.

introduction
According to Wikipedia (2015), Zuma
Rock is a large monolith, an igneous
intrusion composed of gabbro and granodiorite. Zuma Rock is among the fourteen (14)
largest monoliths in the world with a height of 725 metres (2,379 ft)
above its surroundings. Robin, (2015).
It is located at the northern part of the Federal Capital Territory (F.C.T) Abuja, near
Zuba along Abuja – Kaduna express way in Nigeria.
The history of Zuma rock is older than the history of Zuba and the Koro
people that settled around the Zuma rock. It is popularly known among the Koro
people of Zuba as “its life cycle”. The life, traditions, heritages, cultures
and history of the Koro Zuba had revolved around Zuma rock before the 20th
century. It had been known that by the 15th century the Kwararafa (Kororofa)
had started to spread all over the northern areas of Nigeria. Meek (1931). The people
of Zuba today were part of the Kwararafa (Kororofa) that
are called or identified today as Koro people.
It is very necessary to write a piece on the Zuma rock as
you can hardly see a written record about the Zuma rock in books, research
articles or other sources from the internet. Although, it has been an existing
feature which no written
explanation has been made to its appearance as is seen today. The Zuma rock
at a point in time played prominent role in the life of the Koro people and
their environment and as proclaimed by the same. In fact Zuma Rock is the pride
of the Koro people as claimed by their fore fathers.
In
this book you will get to be informed about, the exodus of the Koro people from
the Kororofa empire; the worshiping of the Zuma rock by the Koro people; the origin
of the name “Zuma Rock”; Zuba and Zuma rock; Zuba and Abuja (Suleja); Koro
communities around Zuma rock; Zuma rock and the Koro people; the Koro Nulu; FCT
and Zuma rock; Zuma rock traditions and Agora of Zuba leadership; wonders and
beliefs known of Zuma rock and the masquerades.
